The Complete “The ‘Let’s Play’ ” – All Eight Pages Of The New Retro Gaming Comedy Comic By C. A. Brown

2016 Artwork The Complete The Let's Play

Well, in case you missed any of it, I thought that I’d post all of “The ‘Let’s Play” in one handy blog post.

This was a short, self-contained eight-page comic that I made in about three days. It also features Derek and Rox from my “Damania” webcomic series (with brief cameo appearances by Roz and Harvey too). More comics in this series can be found here, here, here, here, here and here.

As usual, all of the pages in this post are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence. You can also see a larger version of each page by clicking on it.

Today’s Art (22nd June 2016)

Woo hoo! It’s the final page of a new self-contained 8-9 page comic, starring Derek and Rox from “Damania” (the last “Derek & Rox” comic was made in 2013). If you want to see more of Derek and Rox (plus a couple of other characters) they also appear in comics here, here, here, here, here and here.

Sorry about the art quality on this page, even after a lot of digital editing – it still looks more like something from 2013 than something from 2016. This sharp drop in art quality was mostly due to a combination of factors – I was in a slight rush when I made this page, my pen was running low on ink and I was also in a slightly unenthusiastic mood.

I’ll probably post a retrospective of the whole comic here later tonight, so don’t worry if you missed any of it.

I don’t know why, but it always annoys me slightly when let’s players on Youtube use cheat codes when playing classic FPS games. Yes, there are a few circumstances where cheats genuinely come in handy, but most old games were carefully designed to be “challenging, but fair“.

Stay tuned for the final page tomorrow 🙂

Does anyone else tend to do this a lot in classic FPS games?

This page is a hard-hitting commentary on the appalling lack of octo-shotguns in the FPS genre.

This is probably my favourite page of the comic so far, but I still don’t quite know the difference between a bordello and a bawdy house. I presume that the latter could only be found in Victorian London.

And, yes, Derek’s dialogue in the final panel was originally a lot more articulate and cynical, but I worried that it was perhaps too cynical, so I altered it to something a lot shorter.

And, for the record, I have very mixed views about the sudden increase in political criticism of games over the past 3-6 years. In some ways, it’s a really good thing – in other ways it isn’t.

If it leads to more well-written and interesting characters, a wider range of playable characters, more complex storytelling in some genres of games, a greater diversity of game types, more 1990s-style indie adventure games that will actually run on my computer etc… then all of this political criticism is undeniably good.

But, if it leads to censorship and an end to the rebelliousness that games and game culture used to have, then all of this modern “liberal” games criticism is just as bad as the “conservative” moral panics about violent videogames in the 1990s.

Games are art, but they’re also still a relatively new medium and this “newness” won’t last forever, so game developers may as well enjoy shocking the establishment before they fully end up joining it.

Well, now you know why FPS game protagonists in the 1990s sometimes wore shades.
