Today’s Art (22nd March 2018)

Well, I thought that I’d try something a bit different for this month’s webcomic mini series. Unlike most of my comics, the self-contained updates in this new mini series won’t feature my regular cast of characters. You can catch up on previous updates here: “Red Dress“, “Look Both Ways“, “L’enfer C’est Les Autres

This was mostly because I found that I was running out of inspiration/enthusiasm during the previous mini series and, rather than taking another 1-2 month+ comics hiatus (and due to worries about repeating the great comics drought of ’14), I decided to try another, more experimental, project…

Wordless comics! Comics without words! Silent comics! At the time of writing, I don’t know how long this mini series will be or how well it will turn out. But, I’m optimistic.

This comic ended up being a somewhat stylised autobiographical comic, which was based on one morning in early summer 2009 where I ended up wandering the streets of Aberystwyth with a digital camera between the time the nightclubs closed and everyone else got up. I’ve used the resulting photos (like this one or this one) as the basis for paintings before, but one interesting feature is that the town looks completely and utterly deserted in most of the photos.

As usual, this comic update is released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Today’s Art (30th January 2018)

Today’s digitally-edited painting is based on an old photo I took in Aberystwyth in mid 2009. Neither the photo nor my painting really does justice to the beauty of the crisp, slightly misty summer morning when I took the photo. Even so, I quite like how the painting turned out (even if I messed up the composition slightly and used a bit of artistic licence). Plus, if anyone’s curious, here’s the “work in progress” line art for the painting.

As usual, this painting is released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Today’s Art (1st September 2015)

Well, for today, I thought that I’d make a new watercolour version of one of my favourite drawings from 2012. This was a picture that was vaguely inspired by a song I heard called “Mystery Hand” by a gothic punk band called Funeral Crashers ( as of May this year, you can still listen to the song on their website).

Anyway, I’m quite proud of how the new version of the picture turned out, although I ended up using a few digital effects and I also ended up using a different perspective to the one I’d originally planned to use. Likewise, I painted Aberystwyth from memory, so I probably got a couple of details wrong.

As usual, I’ll include the original picture from 2012 here for comparison too.

As usual, both pictures in this post are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Well, I’m still in the mood for making B&W drawings based on photos, so I decided to make yet another picture of Aberystwyth – based on one of the old photos I took when I was there in 2009.

Anyway, one of the many cool things about Aberystwyth is that if you look at certain parts of it in the right way (and in the right weather), they look like something from a wonderfully gothic old American horror movie.

As usual, this drawing is released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Today’s Art (16th December 2014)

Although I have no plans to re-start my “Aberystwyth Series” as a regular feature again, today’s painting is based on another photo of Aberystwyth that I took in 2009 (although I used a fair amount of artistic licence, since grey weather looks more dramatic in photos than it does in paintings).

As a blog exclusive (since this painting will probably be on DeviantART by now), I’ll also include a copy of the photo that it’s based on too.

As usual, the painting and photo in this blog post are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Well, I’m still looking at some of my old drawings from 2007 and re-making better modern versions of them.

So, today’s (digitally-edited) watercolour painting is based on one of my first attempts at sketching from life – back when I was a student in Aberystwyth in 2007, I used to hang out in this cafe in the Arts Centre between lectures. And, one day in November, I decided to try to sketch the view from the window (I’ll include this sketch here as well).

Today’s painting is also another addition to my “Aberystwyth Series” of paintings – although I don’t plan to go back to making these regularly.

As usual, both pictures in this post are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.
