Alternate Dialogue! Unfinished Art! Yes, It’s The (Almost) Complete “Work In Progress” Line Art For “Damania Resurgence” :)

2016 Artwork Damania Resurgence lineart article sketch

As regular readers of this site probably know, I made a webcomic mini series called “Damania Resurgence” back in April.

Anyway, this series was surprisingly challenging to write and, in quite a few cases, I ended up digitally altering the dialogue after scanning the finished updates.

However. I also scanned these updates when they were still at the line art stage. So, if you want to see the “deleted scenes” from this series, then they’re right here. You’ll also get to see quite a few of the mistakes I made (and digitally corrected in the finished comics) when making the art too.

Most of the line art is pretty much as it originally was at the time of scanning [albeit with the usual digital adjustments to the brightness/contrast levels for the sake of clarity], however, in one comic, I ended up digitally censoring the line art after scanning it (mainly due to worries that the joke I’d originally included in the comic was too risque). Sorry about this.

Anyway, here’s the line art – and, if you want to compare it to the finished comics, they can be found here. Enjoy 🙂

Planning A Webcomic Update – From Scribble To Finished Comic

2016 Artwork Webcomic planning article sketch

One of the first things that I’ll say is that everyone who has every made anything even resembling a webcomic has a subtly different approach to planning thier comics. There isn’t really a “one size fits all” way to plan a webcomic update.

Some people like to write out a script, some people like to make a basic sketch in another sketchbook, some people like to plan it out as they go along, some people don’t plan at all and some people like to use a combination of these things. Different things work for different people.

When it comes to the short continuation of an old webcomic of mine that I was making at the time of writing, I use an approach that I also used for the previous instalment of this short series where I’ll often scribble out a very basic (and small) version of the planned comic in another sketchbook, using a ballpoint pen.

The interesting thing is that these planning sketches don’t always resemble the finished comic. Sometimes, I’ll make more than one planning sketch but, usually, I’ll make fairly significant changes to the dialogue, panel layout and/or joke when I’m actually making the pencil sketch for the final comic.

For example, here are two planning sketches of mine for the same comic, made several hours apart from each other:

This is the very first sketch, inspired by the fact that I wanted to show Harvey shouting "Halt! Charlatan!" because it seemed like the kind of melodramatic thing that he'd say.

This is my second sketch, from a few hours (and one comic) later. As you can see, I only bothered to plan the first two panels.

And here’s the finished comic that these sketches ended up turning into:

As you can see, I ditched the idea in the first planning sketch – since the joke about Harvey secretly wanting to be a stage magician was kind of predictable and not that funny. Initially, I abandoned this idea altogether and made another cartoon instead.

But, after making that comic, I couldn’t think of what to do for the next comic. Since I’d been playing a computer game (“The Blackwell Deception”) that involved seances, ghosts etc.. a couple of days earlier, I wanted to make a comic involving these two things. I also wanted to include Rox (another character) since she hadn’t been in the previous comic.

The more I thought about it, the more it seemed like both Harvey and Rox would both enjoy debunking phony seances. Harvey was a detective and Rox was a fairly cynical character. The idea of debunking a phony seance seemed cynical enough to be funny, but not quite mean-spirited enough to be out of character for both of them. So, I sketched out the first two panels.

Still, I wasn’t sure how to finish the comic. So, in the end, I decided to wing it and start making the final pencil sketch. It didn’t take me too long to think of the rest of the comic – although I made at least one major change (at the digital editing stage) after I’d finished inking and painting the comic.

In my original cartoon, there was a very different joke in the third panel. But, due to worries that my original joke might have been too risque, I changed it.

Although the joke was a lot less funny as a result, I’d have felt kind of nervous about keeping the original joke.

Likewise, since the zombie in the fourth panel was a late addition, I’d already drawn out the panel border. So, I had to digitally edit out part of the border (after scanning the original comic and making all of my usual adjustments to the brightness/contrast/ colour saturation levels) once I’d made the decision to show the zombie literally grabbing the edges of the panel.

So, that’s how I planned and made this comic. As you can see, it went through quite a few changes (and a bit of trial and error too). Every artist plans their webcomic updates differently and every webcomic update has it’s own slightly unique planning process too. As long as it works, there isn’t really one “right” way to do it.

The Complete “Damania Resurgence” – All 15 Episodes Of The New Webcomic Mini Series By C. A. Brown

2016 Artwork Damania Resurgence Retrospective sketch

Woo hoo! This “mini series” ran for a whole fifteen episodes 🙂 When I started it, I only expected it to last for 6-8 episodes. Although I’ll probably be taking a break from “Damania” comics for a while, I thought that I’d post the whole mini series here in case you missed any of it.

If you want to check out the previous “Damania” mini series from March, it can be found here. If you want to check out the two short narrative comics (featuring these characters) that I made last year, they can be found here and here.

Anyway, enjoy 🙂

As usual, all fifteen of these comics are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence. If you want to see a larger version of each comic, just click on the image.

Well, here’s the next comic in my short reboot of my old webcomic series (the previous short reboot can be seen here).

Well, I thought that I’d end this mini series on a high, before I really started running out of ideas. This series was a lot of fun to make (albeit quite a bit of effort, given that I made the whole thing in about a week or so – even though it was posted over two weeks).

Like with the previous mini series, I’ll probably post a retrospective of the whole mini series on here later tonight. Normal daily art posts will resume tomorrow.

Stay tuned for a line art post for this series (containing alternate dialogue etc..) on the 8th May too. As well as a slew of articles about making this comic (and webcomics in general) in early May, mainly because I’m somewhat further ahead with writing the articles than I am with these daily art posts.

Today’s Art (26th April 2016)

Well, here’s the next comic in my short reboot of my old webcomic series (the previous short reboot can be seen here).

Well, for the penultimate comic in this mini series, I thought that I’d make a cynical comic about those jump scare-based horror movies that used to be all the rage in the early-mid ’00s.

Of course, American studios liked them because the lack of gruesome scenes meant that these films got a profitable “PG-13” rating in the states. However, since our censors in the UK are somewhat stricter with horror movies, most of these movies would get the same censorship certificate as a few “proper” horror movies do (eg: a “15” certificate). So, when I was a teenager, it was kind of Russian roulette which type of horror movie you would see when you went to the cinema LOL!

Although, at one point, this comic contained a cynical reference to the fact that these kind of films were released by American studios, I later changed this since I realised that said American studios didn’t actually invent this genre (in many cases, they were just lazily remaking much better horror movies from Japan, Korea, Thailand etc…).

Well, here’s the next comic in my short reboot of my old webcomic series (the previous short reboot can be seen here).

Surprisingly, this is the second time that one of the other characters has briefly seen the world in the way that Harvey does (the first time was in 2013 and it can be seen here).
