Today’s Art (20th May 2018)

Well, this digitally-edited painting was kind of random and slightly uninspired. Still, it gave me a chance to practice painting distant backgrounds and adding more realistic shadows/shading to my art with digital tools.

As usual, this painting is released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence.

Today’s Art (19th May 2018)

Today’s digitally-edited painting was originally going to be a cyberpunk painting. However, about halfway through making it, I realised that it wasn’t going to turn out as well as I’d hoped. So, I took the rare step of abandoning it halfway through adding paint to it and starting a totally new painting. Since I happened to be listening to Cradle Of Filth’s “Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa” at the time, I realised that I was more in the mood for making some gothic/heavy metal-style art. And this painting was the result 🙂

Today’s Art (17th May 2018)

Today’s digitally-edited painting is one that I painted from memory (and, no, you don’t need a “photographic memory” to learn how to memorise scenes that you want to paint a short while later) about an hour after seeing this beautiful landscape near Portsdown Hill. I’m not sure if I’ve painted this particular scene before, but I quite like how this painting turned out.

Unfortunately, I was feeling extremely uninspired when I made this digitally-edited painting. Or, more accurately, I was so uninspired that after two failed attempts at making a painting, I found one of my failed attempts at making a painting from the day before and then added some paint to it and a few digital effects (to turn a mediocre “drawn from memory” picture of Penglais Hill in Aberystwyth into some kind of weird 1980s-style gothic paintings).

Well, I was still experimenting with using a mildly more realistic style when I made today’s digitally-edited painting. Originally, this was going to be a painting of a busy formal party – but it ended up being a 1980s/90s style sci-fi painting (with a hint of the 1960s) mostly because I messed up part of the original painting and needed to cover up this part of the background.

Today’s Art (14th May 2018)

Although today’s art technically isn’t a nude painting (the guy is wearing jeans!), it is a bit more similar to one than most of my art – hence why I decided to include a content warning for anyone viewing it via the WordPress reader.

I ended up making this painting for a number of reasons. Initially, it started when I listened to Cradle Of Filth’s “Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids” at full volume (since I was in a stressed out mood and wanted some cathartic music). As I thought of what I would paint, I felt like making some art in the style of the booklet art found in many of Cradle Of Filth’s albums, but I also wondered what this style of risque gothic art would look like with men instead of women.

However, the final painting ended up being more influenced by various comics, the art/writing of Clive Barker and a couple of gothic horror novels ( Brite’s “Drawing Blood” especially). This painting also gave me a chance to practice drawing realistic anatomy too (and, yes, I actually drew a skeleton in pencil whilst sketching).

This is a content warning – the full painting is linked to in the accompanying article.

Unfortunately, today’s digitally-edited painting didn’t really turn out as well as I’d hoped. I’d originally planned to paint an ornate gothic/heavy metal-style painting, but it ended up being a lot more minimalist than I’d original planned.
